Context:

Leipzig has a population of almost 600.000 inhabitants. The growing and intercultural city is the headquarter of our Foundation, from where we promote solidarity through table tennis on a worldwide level, but also have to act local. We aim to ease the access to table tennis for all and different kind of people, to show the recreational and healthy side of table tennis and to use the sport for positive social outcomes.
Our first TT Fun Lab opened in Leipzig to offer a possibility for inhabitants and tourists to play the game in a safe and recreational atmosphere in one of the many green areas of the city.

Project Content:

We believe in the power of table tennis to unite people. It is a perfect sport to better health, get together, learn about fair play and to have fun. Table tennis can be played by all, regardless of age, culture, social status or physical ability. The TT Fun Lab shows all the fun sides of table tennis, people get the possibility to play on different tables, with different materials, alone against a robot or together. It is a space where the whole family has fun. Special invitations went out to include minority groups, such as refugees, persons with a disability or socially disadvantaged youth.

Objectives:

  • Present table tennis as a healthy and fun game for all.
  • Unite people through the practice of table tennis, such as old and young, female and male, rich and poor, locals and foreigners.

Challenges and results:

  • Weather conditions were not ideal for outdoor activities and participation lowered down during school summer holidays
  • Involvement of the local table tennis community
  • 2 players recruited for a local table tennis club
