Understanding the Problem

According to 2019 UNHCR statistics 79.5 million individuals have been forcibly displaced worldwide because of persecution, conflict, violence, or human rights violations. Syrians continued to be the largest forcibly displaced population in the world.

In Jordan alone, over 660,000 Syrian refugees are trapped in exile. Approximately 80% of them live outside camps, while more than 140,000 have found sanctuary at the Za’atari and Azraq refugee camps. More than 60% of Syrian refugee households include a person with disability, and 1/5 of refugees in Jordan have a disability.

Refugees with disabilities face discrimination negative stereotypes and lack of awareness and education results in persons with a disability not being able to access activities.

Understanding the Project

The Dream Building with Refugees project aims to address this by providing access to para sport for refugees living in Jordanian Refugee Camps - Za’atari and Azraq.

Theory of Change

Overall Impact:

Target 10.2: By 2030 empower and promote the social, economic, and political inclusion of all irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status

Primary Impact

The Dream Building with Refugees project works on 3 key areas:

  • Increase Participation - increased levels of regular participation of refugees living with a disability in quality sport activities, including recreational and competitive play.
  • Improve Health Outcomes - improved health-related behaviours of refugees with a disability including psycho-social well-being, noncommunicable disease (NCD) risk factors & quality of life; and
  • Improve Attitudes & Inclusion - improved attitudes towards and increased inclusion of people with disability in refugee communities and host country

Outcomes

  • Increased access to table tennis for PWD through ongoing sessions and provision of equipment packages
  • Local actors develop skills and knowledge to deliver inclusive sport programmes
  • Provide para-specific and inclusive competitions and attendance by PWD
  • Improved attitudes towards and by PWD
  • Increased awareness of disability prevalence within refugee communities, highlighted benefits of sport and opportunities, increased visibility of PWD

Outputs

  • Equipment donations delivered to camp
  • Locals trained in sport. Identify and employ local coaches to implement programme
  • PWD taking part in ongoing weekly activities
  • PWD taking part in competitions
  • 3 events aimed at awareness raising
  • Content generated and shared through media platforms

  • Conduct ITTF PTT Level 1 Coaching Course
