ITTF Foundation in the 2022 International Expert Training on Sport for Development

ITTF Foundation participated in the 2022 International Expert Training on Sport for Development (S4D), 29 August – 3 September 2022, in Skopje, North Macedonia. This training aims to enhance the participant's competence in delivering S4D workshops and monitoring and evaluation skills through mentoring sessions by experts and peer learning methods.

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) Programme, "Sport for Development", supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), in corporation with the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and Olympic Committee of North Macedonia organised a 6-day International Expert Training on Sport for Development (S4D) in Skopje, North Macedonia. Thirty-one participants from fourteen countries in Asia, Europe, Africa, and Latin America participated in this hybrid workshop. Two international experts on S4D, Dr Carolin Braun from Botswana and Nadica Jovanovik from North Macedonia, led the workshop sessions. This workshop aimed to:

  • improve knowledge in S4D following the previous series
  • introduce how to measure the impact of S4D activities
  • introduce S4D exercises from various sports
  • enhance participants' knowledge and improve their experience in delivering S4D workshops.

The workshop was also set in interactive mode. The instructors emphasised peer learning experiential methods and encouraged everyone to share practices in S4D. Aside from presentation and mentoring sessions by the instructors, participants practised the skills and knowledge through simulation training sessions. They engaged as the lead facilitator, and other participants gave them valuable feedback to improve their skills and abilities in leading the S4D workshop. Since participants came from sports backgrounds, they became crafty in utilising equipment to play table tennis between sessions.

“I’m impressed with the content and the knowledge received. Before going, I was not aware of S4D that much, but extremely interested in the M&E part. I learned how to use various methodologies in the workshop, lead a training, and conduct M&E.” - Ramón Ortega Montes or Moncho, Programme Coordinator of the ITTF Foundation.

Moncho found that his understanding about S4D increased after the workshop. He became knowledgeable about how to deliver an S4D workshop and measure its impact. The workshop also provided the instructors and all participants from diverse backgrounds and geographic locations an opportunity to build and maintain networks. The ITTF Foundation is ready to implement the knowledge and skills in real workshops with adjustments and practical ways according to the local reality, as well as M&E plan and creative ideas in the S4D workshop focusing on Table Tennis for Development (TT4D).
