Dream Building Fund powered by GSD: ASA Foundation Training of Trainers Programme Concluded in Jakarta, Indonesia

The ASA Foundation, one of the six recipients of the Dream Building Fund powered by GSD has hosted a Training of Trainers (ToT) programme in North Jakarta, Indonesia.

The 20 programme participants will be leading the table tennis training activities that aim to improve life skills, mental health and well-being of vulnerable youths and adults based in the slum communities of North Jakarta.

After a competitive round of selections of the Dream Building Fund powered by the Foundation for Global Sports Development (GSD), we have announced in November 2021 the six projects that stand to receive financial, strategic, and technical support from the ITTF Foundation. Fast forward to July 2022, we are happy to share the progress ASA Foundation has been making after the initial preparation.

Targeting 20 teachers and 2,000 male and female students, the two-year project by the ASA Foundation aims to develop the core competencies of vulnerable youth and adults in the slums.

These areas suffer from extreme poverty, crime, poor levels of health and education. Through our table tennis-based social intervention programme, we wish to improve the lives of those disadvantaged slum residents, female or male, youths or adults. – Lee Hawkins, Founder of the ASA Foundation.

Contributing to UNSDG 3 (Good health and well-being), 4 (Quality education), 10 (Reduce inequalities), and 12 (Responsible consumption and production), the project uses a mix of classroom workshops, table tennis and youth development methodology to bring health, life skills, gender equality and circular economy education to the target group.

Additionally, the project seeks to recruit, train, and employ talented adult beneficiaries to lead the programme.

The recently concluded ToT programme provides livelihood opportunities, such as steady income and career development for our participants. The 20 teachers in Physical Education who have taken part in the ToT programme are now our master trainers for future projects across Indonesia, leading table tennis training activities for their student groups. – Lee Hawkins.

New adventures unfold as the six recipients of the Dream Building Fund powered by GSD steadily kickstart their activities. We look forward to more exciting news from the field and appreciate the opportunity to accompany them on the journey to bring the positive social change their communities need.
